http://southwestpremierinsuranceagency.comUpdate:  Proof of Vehicle Insurance Shown Electronically will become law August 2, 2012.

Insurance companies and agencies will not be required to provide electronic versions to their policyholders so if they won't or can't or don't even know about this new law then maybe it's time to look for a new company and agency.

This new law will not require the policyholder to use an electronic version of their insurance id card, it's merely an option.

See my original post below for a few other caveats about this new law.

Arizona drivers can now show proof of insurance, electronically from their smart phone or tablet, when providing proof of auto insurance to a police officer.

The new law, signed by the Governor, will allow the use of an application displaying an image of the insurance card or a picture of the insurance card which can be displayed on a mobile phone or other electronic device.

Don't worry about your privacy because this legislation doesn't allow or authorize the police to access other information on the device.

Some caveats you need to know:  1) If your device doesn't function properly you will still need to provide proof of insurance so if you don't have your id card in the vehicle you will still be cited for not having proof of insurance.  2) If you rely on your device for proof of insurance and let someone borrow your car you are still responsible for having proof of insurance in the car or lend your device to the driver with the image readily available or the driver will be cited for driving without proof of insurance.

This new law should provide an extra layer of convenience and protection for Arizona drivers.  Many insurance companies have mobile apps and offer Paperless discounts to their customers so having the ability to show your id card from your mobile device will be a big deal for many drivers.

This new law (HB2677) will take effect 90 days after the legislative session ends.
