Fantastic question by a Twitter follower, Letitia Saienni, regarding the recent meteor/meteorite damage in Russia. By the way, I always love receiving questions via Twitter or Facebook and will respond promptly and I might even write a quick blog post as well about a question.

Generally, your home insurance or hazard insurance policy will cover direct physical loss to building property except as limited or excluded by the policy. Falling objects, whether from space or aircraft or otherwise, are not excluded and therefore would be covered if there is direct physical loss to your building property.

As far as damage to personal property (i.e. your stuff) there is a requirement that first must occur in order for your policy to provide coverage.

The falling object must first damage the roof or an outside wall of the building in order for any personal property damage to be covered.

As with any insurance policy you must take the time to read your policy. Not every policy is the same so read yours carefully and seek the advice and counsel of a qualified insurance professional if you have any questions.
