I ran across an article on the Governors Highway Safety Association that shares the Top 10 Excuses for Not Buckling Up as reported by the Delaware Office of Highway Safety. You can read the full article here. I wasn't able to find anything related to the excuses people give in Arizona, but I'm sure they're very similar. Before I list the Top 10 Excuses let me remind of Arizona's law for seatbelt usage.

Arizona requires all front seat passengers and other occupants under the age of 16 to wear seatbelts. This is the responsibility of the driver. The driver would be cited if a violation occurs. Arizona is a "Secondary" enforcement state which means that you can't be pulled over simply because of a seatbelt violation. You must be stopped because of some other traffic violation. If you are a front seat passenger and over 16, but not the driver, you, too, can be cited.

Any persons driving passengers under the age of 8 and under 4' 9" must have the child properly secured in a child restraint system. Arizona is a "Primary" enforcement state when it comes to child restraint systems. You can be pulled over simply for not restraining children properly in your vehicle if it's noticed by the police. Read the full legislation here.

Top 10 Excuses for Not Buckling Up

  1. I'm afraid of getting stuck after a car crash.
  2. It irritates the skin on my chest and neck.
  3. It makes me feel restrained.
  4. I'm too large to wear a seatbelt.
  5. I can't look over my shoulder before making turns.
  6. I forgot.
  7. Nobody tells me what to do in my car.
  8. I have an air bag. I don't need a seatbelt.
  9. I can't wear a seatbelt because I can't feed my baby with it on.
  10. I have a medical condition. I can't wear it.

I'm sure you'll agree with me, these are the dumbest excuses I've ever heard. If you're making any of these excuses, I don't know what to say. Suffice it to say, teach and expect your kids to wear their seatbelts. Lead by example and wear yours as well. It just might save the life of your child someday because they learn from you. Be the example. Set the example!
