My wife and I just came back from a wonderful tour of Italy celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary. It was a whirlwind tour of The Best of Italy which we thoroughly enjoyed! I'm not going to discuss the tour here in this blog, but you can find out more about the itinerary for this tour over at our sister company, Cruise Planners-Arizona Cruise and Travel, which my wife, Kristin Morris, and I own. This tour is very popular and 2016 dates are already booking up. The Best of Italy.
What I am going to share in this post is 3 Compelling Reasons You Need Travel Insurance This Summer, when you're vacationing out of the country.
- Travel Delay- In my recent experience, it is rare today that airlines leave on time. Delays are a constant concern especially when trying to reach a destination where you're catching a cruise or a tour. The cruise ship won't wait for you if you're late. Travel insurance will cover things like, Extended Travel Delays, Missed Connections, Damaged or Lost Baggage, and Delayed Baggage. The policy you purchase will clearly spell out the coverage provided for these types of delays and coverage varies by insurance company. The travel providers such as the cruise line or tour company will offer travel insurance, but often times 3rd party travel insurance will be more broad and more flexible when it comes to reimbursement of added expenses.
- Trip Cancellation- Often times, people will buy travel insurance because they are concerned about having to cancel their trip ahead of the actual trip. This is a very valid reason to buy travel insurance however, many times trips need to be cut short due to medical issues or emergencies. This happened on our trip to Italy with two people on the tour. The teen daughter of a couple wasn't feeling well and the father decided to take her back home. Unfortunately, they didn't buy travel insurance. All cruises and tours are NON-REFUNDABLE after a certain date so this family spent thousands on a tour that two people didn't complete plus they had extra costs to change their flights to leave early. Travel insurance would have reimbursed them for most of their expenses including the cost of the trip.
- Emergency Medical and Transportation- This coverage is critical whether you're young or old. Keep in mind, this coverage is secondary to your health insurance, but your health insurance probably will have severe gaps and limitations if you're traveling overseas so it's important to have travel insurance. In older parts of Europe, the possibility to trip and fall is a constant threat. Even though our tour had no injuries such as twisted or broken ankles, our tour director told us medical emergencies happen regularly on tours and cruises. Imagine breaking an ankle in Rome and having to cut your trip short because you couldn't continue on the tour or cruise. It happens and that's why you need travel insurance.
No one should leave on a vacation overseas without Travel Insurance, period. To fly and take a cruise or a tour overseas can cost thousands of dollars. It's wise to protect your vacation investment with Travel Insurance.
