Are you planning a trip to Puerto Penasco Mexico? This is a favorite destination of many families in Arizona, especially those in Phoenix, Chandler, Scottsdale, Gilbert, and Tempe as "Rocky Point" is only 4 hours away. A short drive and you can enjoy the beach, the sun, the surf, and a cervesa or two.
Before you go you must be aware of new changes in Mexican law regarding liability in the event of a death in an car accident.
Up to recently, if you were the driver in an at-fault accident, who caused a negligent fatality, the liability damages were capped at 730 days multiplied by the local Mexico Minimum Wage which amounted to about $50,000 in most Mexican States.
Now, the limit has been increased by the Mexican Government to 5,000 days which is a nearly 700% increase in the potential damages you may be responsible to pay if you're the at-fault driver.
My recommendation is to purchase at least $300,000 for Mexico Auto Liability insurance and I highly recommend $500,000. Don't skimp when it comes to the insurance required while driving in Mexico.
If you travel to Mexico frequently and you have a longer term insurance policy, check with the insurance company as many have agreed to honor the $300,000 Death Liability on all currently in force policies until expiration, if the policy was purchased before February 4, 2013.
I encourage you to enjoy Mexico, especially Rocky Point, and before you go get yourself the right amount of liability insurance.
