What would your home insurance policy cover if you lost everything?
You may never want to face this question but some day you just might have to and it's your responsibility to know what is and what isn't covered. It's your responsibility to know what limitations there are in your policy. It's your responsibility to know what's excluded?
That's right! It's your responsibility to know because when something major happens (and it will) you'll be prepared.
Will your home be re-built or repaired at the right price? Was the replacement estimate accurate? How much is all my stuff worth? Is the stuff in my garage, that's been in boxes for years, covered at replacement value or actual cash value? How much additional living expenses will I receive while repairs or a total rebuild is being done?
Most agents are going to offer you the best policy they can provide, at the best possible price, but if you are most concerned with price then you may be surprised when a claim occurs. Fifteen minutes on the phone, or buying a policy over the internet, or through email almost guarantees that you may not know or understand how your policy will cover you when a loss occurs.
The policies today are very readable and understandable. Take the time to read through your policy. If you have questions, ask your agent. Know your policy. It could save you lots of headache in the future.
